DACR STUDENT OF THE MONTH
by Amanda Maze

Eva Chavez is our day school student of the month for February.  Eva is a make-up artist now and court reporting really caught her eye (no pun intended).  She would like the stability of an officialship somewhere in the Denver metro area.  Eva’s biggest challenge so far in school is that she migrated from Mexico just seven years ago and still deals with some language barrier issues.  Can you believe how motivated this young woman is!  And why was she voted the student of the month?  Eva says it’s because of attendance and transcribing daily.

The February night school student of the month is Melody Carpenter.  Melody is in the 100 class and only began school a year ago!  She currently has plans to stay in the Denver metro area, but is open to all types of reporting when she is done with school.  Melody’s biggest challenge at school thus far is the homonyms, which rear their ugly head at us all.  She thinks that she was voted student of the month because of her positive attitude and attendance (and she was quite surprised to get this award).

Jennifer Solis is the March day school student of the month.  Jennifer says that being an active mom and court reporting is all that she has time for nowadays and that the perfect balance is a goal.  Whose isn’t!  She plans on being somewhere in the metro area and being a captioner/sub in court.  Jennifer is in the 120/140 class currently and thinks that she was awarded the student of the month because she has a positive attitude and is moving well in school (July 2001 she started!).  Jennifer got into court reporting because of word-of-mouth advertising.  Let’s keep our mouths open for more great students like this.

The student of the month for March for night school is Jawone Sanford, who is currently in 100/120, having only started school in February of 2001.  Jawone’s biggest challenge at school so far is enough time to practice each day, as she holds down a full-time job as well.  This month’s student is leaning towards being an official and is open to moving to other parts of the state or other states.  And why was Jawone chosen student of the month?  Positive & upbeat attitude, she says.  I have no doubt that this great attitude will get her far.

Melissa Brown and Tami Rice, students of the month for April, were  unavailable for an interview.
